WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • Motec M122 ECU with GPR-DI Firmware
  • STROM B48 Calibration and Tuning
  • Wiring Diagrams, Cooling Diagrams and Installation Notes
  • Everything else detailed below is separate

This is a Motec M122 ECU setup to run a BMW B48D in any car as a standalone engine package. We now provide this with open ECU software so you can change the tuning as you see fit. The base files we provide are meant as a starting point on the tuning to your specific setup. If you follow exactly what we have done then the engine should run flawlessly however it is still up to you to dyno the car and verify everything is working correctly.

The Motec ECU package with our calibration and tuning is meant to run the engine perfectly as a factory ECU would and we provide tunes for either 91 or 93 octane with full flex fuel integration so you can fill up with E85 or have any mix of Ethanol and immediately have more power. You don't have to touch anything - the car automatically adapts. We can provide tuning for the stock turbo or our Larger Turbos. It is intended for off-road use only and while it has been tuned to be efficient and have better emissions than stock E46 and was calibrated with a catalytic converter it does not have readiness codes or similar features needed to make it CARB legal.

This package is an offshoot of our B46 race car Motec M142 package and is meant to simplify and reduce the cost for general use. We provide comprehensive documentation for wiring, plumbing and other integration specifics. We are also about to release a PnP engine harness for this control unit.

The M122 ECU controls and uses the following OEM factory parts on the BMW B48D with complete calibrations and tuning from our software:

  • Direct Injectors
  • High Pressure Fuel Pump
  • Intake and Exhaust Cams
  • Wastegate Servo Actuator
  • Stock Turbocharger
  • Throttle Body
  • Charge pipe and Manifold pressure sensors
  • Crank and Cam Sensors
  • Oil Pressure Sensor
  • Ignition Coils with addition of Igniter
  • Knock Sensors

It does not control the Valvetronic system, Oil Pressure Control Solenoid or Oil Level Sensor

Integration to your specific to your specific vehicle is up to you. We can assist but charge for consulting. Additional tuning, calibration and diagnosis is charged at our B48 Consult rate.

OTHER ITEMS NEEDED:

You will need the following other parts or solutions at a minimum for this to work - assuming it was going in a car that already has B48 in it:

  • Valvetronic Lift lockout
  • Dipstick or a way to check oil level (factory oil pan level sensor not enabled)
  • Thermostat Retrofit Kit - we  made a plate to delete the factory HMM which is complicated and needs special firmware to manage and run a more standard style thermostat from an N52 or N20.
  • Modified engine harness integrated into the M122 ECU. We are working on a complete plug and play solution for this. At this time we are cutting and modifying the stock harness that comes with the engine. Our plug and play harness should be available around October 2026.
  • Chassis connections for CAN Bus, Throttle Pedal, Fuel Pump, Power, Ground
  • Lambda Sensor Controller (CAN Bus) such as Motec or ECU Master and Lambda Sensor
  • Ignition Coil Igniter (Control Unit) - 4D0905351 / 0227100211

Features:

  • Power levels depend on your specific setup such as intake, exhaust, intercooler
  • 280whp with stock turbo on 91 octane
  • 320whp / 430lbft with stock turbo on E85
  • 414whp / 450lbft with 48mm turbo (G25-550 bolt on)
  • Optional Flat power curve tuning for class rules with switchable power levels
  • Full flex fuel integration - fill it up and forget it. ECU tracks E85 content and adjusts tune such as boost, fueling and ignition timing accordingly.
  • Integration with stock E46 cluster for Tachometer and Engine Temp
  • Display integration with ECU Master ADU Display for A/C, traction control and other features depending on setup (additional cost)
  • Full CAN stream for use with aftermarket display (ECUMaster, Motec, Aim etc)
  • Engine safe modes for low oil pressure, engine temp, intake temp, sensor failures and more
  • Calibrated knock control
  • "Check Engine Light" and fault codes for most engine issues from high pressure pump issues to camshafts not moving correctly. This can be viewed from the Motec software or an aftermarket dash.

THE B48D ENGINE

BMW has made their engine name convention insanely confusing and uses different codes in different place. This is meant for the B48D/B46D/B48TU engine also labeled the B46B20O1. Bimmerworld has a good reference doc. One defining feature is the intercooler outlet on the manifold is on the top of the manifold and the inlet is underneath whereas the previous generation motor (B48B) has the inlet and outlet at the back of the manifold with a metal plate being visible. The other defining feature is the Heat Management module is on the side of the engine instead of the front. If the model has a G in it and was built between 2019 and 2024 it generally has  B48D in it. The X1 and X2 use transverse engines that are completely different. You can use the X-drive models but have to change the oil pan.

  • G20 330i 2019-2024
  • G30 530i 2019-2024
  • G29 Z4 3.0i
  • G01 X3 sdrive30i or xdrive30i - have to change the oil pan on either.

Purchase an engine that has as many of the accessories as possible. You will want the following unless you intend to replace with something else. These items are specifically mentioned as we have had various engines come without them and it is much more expensive to buy these a la carte, even if you get a good deal on the engine.

  • Intercooler Pump and bracket (frequently taken by salvage yards)
  • Turbo after-run pump
  • Turbocharger and turbo coolant/oil lines (4 lines)
  • Wastegate Actuator (attached to the turbo)
  • Charge pipe (it has the sensors in it even if you want to run an aftermarket pipe)
  • Throttle Body
  • Intake manifold
  • Wiring Harnesses (undamaged)
  • High pressure fuel pump and sensor
  • Starter - the engines almost never come with a starter but it doesn't hurt to ask
  • Alternator
  • Battery Cables for Alternator and Starter

PARTS NEEDED FOR SWAP:

This is a more comprehensive list of what is needed to swap it into another car beyond the minimum parts listed above. If you are savvy you can make or sort out these items yourself. We will be releasing a full guide:

  • Engine
  • Transmission - GS6-37DZ or others - will be detailed in the guide. Stay tuned!
  • Transmission Mount Bracket (GS6-37DZ in E46) 22316760532 and 22316760531
  • Clutch and Flywheel - will be in the guide as there is a lot. Technically an E90 320D setup fits.
  • Custom driveshaft - best practices for this also in guide! Additionally we are working on spacer to use the stock E46 driveshaft but it is in testing.
  • Motor Mount Brackets
  • Intercooler Radiator
  • Coolant and Intercooler Hoses (in the guide)!
  • Expansion tanks and mounts
  • Downpipe and Exhaust Join
  • Intake - modify the stock one or we are making one (coming soon)
  • Power Steering Pump Adapter which replaces the stock B48 A/C compressor (coming soon) or Electric Power Steering.
  • A/C Delete also available
  • Fuel Plumbing and Flex Fuel Sensor
  • Wiring Connector Kit
  • A good cooling fan - the Motec ECU has 110hz or 110hp PWM control for a fan like this one or a BMW factory fan.
